Malmö: Five Weekends in March

March in Malmö is a lot like the city itself: varied, unexpected and full of possibility. Spring is just getting started, but the performing arts scene is already in full bloom.

Let us introduce five types of weekend travellers. Which one are you joining?

Music Lovers – Carmen at Malmö Opera

(Performed in French, with Swedish and English surtitles)
They crave drama, music and big emotions. Going all in on passion, jealousy and immortal arias on a grand stage.
Stay close to the spotlight: Cosy Teaterhotellet is just a few flamenco steps from the Opera.
Set the mood: Start the evening at Operagrillen – close by and tried and tested.
Add on: An art break at Malmö Konsthall, the opera’s neighbour.

Broadway Buffs – Come From Away at Malmö Opera

(Performed in Swedish, with Swedish and English surtitles)
They fancy energy, ensemble numbers and soaring key changes. It’s Broadway at the Opera.
Stay central and comfy: Newly renovated Hotel Bishops Arms Malmö is close to… everything.
Eat easy: Malmö Saluhall brings many kitchens under one roof.
Also book: A visit to Disgusting Food Museum for a tasting experience you won’t forget anytime soon.

Dance Devotees – Out of the Blue by Skånes Dansteater
From Bach to Björk. Contemporary dance with a pulse.
Stay in style: Story Hotel Studio in the Western Harbour blends sea, city and design.
Eat with an edge: La Fonderie, housed in a former foundry, serves French classics with finesse.
Make time for: Long walks, a fika at Slottsträdgårdens Kafé and a visit to Moderna Museet Malmö.

Comedy Crew – Laughing in English

Travelling purely for fun.
Stay ridiculously close: Catch Malmö English Comedy Nights at Scandic Triangeln and take the elevator upstairs afterwards.
Eat and drink: Around Lilla Torg. A pint at Drumbar? Tapas at Lola Maria? Meatballs at Moosehead Bar? Or all of the above.
Before heading home: Sunday brunch at Clarion Hotel Malmö Live before catching the train.

Disco Queens – THE SHOW – A Tribute to ABBA at Malmö Arena
They want more glitter, sing-alongs and maximum nostalgia. Celebrating 50 years of Dancing Queen.
Stay next door: At Malmö Arena Hotel or Quality Hotel View.
Warm up: In one of the hotel sky bars or at Umami District in Emporia.
Make a weekend of it: Shop at Emporia, try indoor skydiving at LEAP, hop on the train (three minutes) into the city centre and paint the town.

The stage is yours! The only question is: which one?
