Sport in Malmö – arenas, teams and major events

Malmö is a natural player in the world of sport, with elite teams, major arenas and recurring events throughout the year. Sport here is staged at both national and international level, alongside a broad and active sports scene with matches, competitions and events across many different disciplines.

Football in Malmö – elite level at home and abroad
Football holds a strong position in Malmö and has long placed the city on the European sports map. Malmö FF (MFF) is one of Sweden’s most successful football clubs, with both men’s and women’s teams competing in the Allsvenskan. The club regularly takes part in European tournaments such as the Champions League and Europa League, with home matches played at Eleda Stadion.

Women’s football also has a clear international presence in the city. FC Rosengård is one of Sweden’s most successful women’s football clubs and has competed in the Champions League on several occasions. Home matches are played at Malmö IP.

Ice hockey and major arena experiences
Ice hockey also plays an important role in Malmö’s sporting landscape. Malmö Redhawks compete in the SHL, Sweden’s top ice hockey league, and attract large crowds during the season. The team is based at Malmö Arena, a modern multi-purpose venue for sport and large-scale events.

Athletics and an active sports culture
Athletics has a long tradition in Malmö. Malmö Allmänna Idrottsförening (MAI) is one of Sweden’s largest and most successful athletics clubs and regularly organises races, competitions and sporting events for both elite athletes and grassroots participants. The club is part of a wider ecosystem where many sports and organisations contribute to the city’s active sports culture.

Recurring sports events in Malmö
Among the annual sports events that strengthen Malmö’s sporting profile are Malmö Open, one of the world’s largest club-level parasport events, held since 1977, and Toughest – an obstacle course race focused on strength, endurance, balance and stamina.

Host city for major international sports events
On several occasions, Malmö has also hosted major international sports events. The city has welcomed qualifying races for the America’s Cup, staged international championships such as the World Junior Ice Hockey Championship and the Floorball World Championship, and served as a host venue for both the Handball World Championship and the European Handball Championship.
