Malmö hits the ground running in 2026

Everyday life barely has time to settle before Malmö shifts into celebration mode. January brings the buzz of top-level handball, February follows with thousands of visiting furries – and in between, the city’s stages are packed with energy.

World-class sport and a citywide celebration go hand in hand when MEN’S EHF EURO 2026 arrives in Malmö. From January 15 to February 1, Europe’s best national teams compete across Sweden, Denmark and Norway, with Malmö as one of the host cities. At Malmö Arena, Sweden, Croatia, the Netherlands and Georgia face off in six group matches and a main round. Off the court, a lively Fanzone at Lilla Torg keeps the championship spirit going with activities, community vibes and plenty of championship excitement.

Not quite your thing? Prefer dancing bears and singing foxes to sports crowds? NordicFuzzCon, Europe’s largest international furry convention, could be just the ticket. Last year, 5,335 visitors from 62 countries gathered to celebrate creativity and self-expression. The 2026 edition takes place February 18–22 at Clarion Hotel & Congress Malmö Live. On February 20, the Open House/NerdMarket invites everyone in for a rare, up-close look at furry culture – with friendly fursuiters, fika, doodling, games and relaxed hangouts.

And the early months of the year offer much more than sport and fluffy characters for international visitors:

  • Bizet’s opera Carmen opens at Malmö Opera on January 17, bringing drama and unforgettable melodies. Sung in French, with Swedish and English surtitles.
  • On January 30, Skånes Dansteater presents the world premiere of May Fall by Italian choreographer Aristide Rontini – a hypnotic exploration of holding on, letting go and daring to leap.
  • That same night, Ukrainian rock legend Oleg Skrypka and his band Vopli Vidopliassova (VV) bring their tour to Moriskan for their only Swedish show.
  • On February 4, German electronic music pioneers Tangerine Dream take over Slagthuset, blending cutting-edge technology with a sound that has shaped generations.
  • Biograf Spegeln is a cinema, bar and bistro where there’s almost always something going on. On February 6, the gala premiere of Marty Supreme takes place – Josh Safdie’s 1950s New York ping-pong drama, already hailed as a modern classic.
  • February 20 brings Seven Drunken Nights – The Story of The Dubliners straight from London’s West End to Amiralen, filled with beloved Irish sing-alongs.
